The Academic Division specialises in minigraphs (~30-40K), or short-form academic books, although longer-form monographs will also be considered. It welcomes formal innovation as well as work that pushes thought in new directions from within traditional academic constraints. It is not wedded to a particular discipline, only to books which seek to rethink the existing settlement.
All books are published fully open access and free to download. Books published by the Academic Division are also available for purchase in paperback via global distribution. Books are uploaded and archived at hCommons CORE, a non-profit repository for open access works. Behind-the-scenes book metadata is managed via Thoth, a non-profit, open metadata management and dissemination platform. All revenues from the Academic Division go towards maintaining the press. Books are published with a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence. All rights remain with the author(s).

Submissions
Submissions to the academic division should be sent by email to contact [at] erratumpress [dot] com and have 'Academic Division' in the subject line. Submissions can be made either (1) at the proposal stage or (2) after the completion of the full manuscript. A submission must include either (1) book proposal + sample chapters/writing sample, or (2) book proposal + full manuscript for review. The book proposal and writing sample/manuscript should be sent as attachments with a brief covering note included in the email
The book proposal should include: (1) Book title; (2) Book description, 100-200 words, written as it might appear on the back cover; (3) Summary of the book, 500-1000 words, explaining its style, approach, argument and significance; (4) Brief 100-200 word chapter-by-chapter summaries; (5) Author bio, ~100 words written as it might appear on the back cover; (6) Plans for book promotion to accompany/augment press promotion on social media; (8) Brief note on why this book is right for the press and why it best suits the form of a minigraph (if appropriate); (9) Names, affiliations and email addresses for two agreed reviewers.
Review process
Note on the review process: In most cases a 2-stage review process will be followed, with reviews secured at the initial proposal stage and when the final manuscript is submitted. Author(s) suggest 2 reviewers at the initial proposal stage who are prepared engage in open (i.e. non-blind) peer review. The proposed reviewers should not be closely affiliated with the author(s) but need to be aware of and able to comment on the significance and quality of their work. The reviewers should have been contacted prior to the submission of the proposal and should be prepared to (i) review at the initial book proposal, and (ii) provide supportive critical feedback on the full submitted manuscript if the book is commissioned. Reviewers are expected to return comments within 1-2 months for the initial review, and within 4 months depending on availability for the full submitted manuscript. In some cases a third reviewer may be invited for open/blind review (depending on the preferences of the reviewer).
Book Production
Note on book production: Final manuscripts should be submitted by email with each chapter as a separate file attachment (and labelled e.g. ‘01_Contents’, ‘02_Preface’, ‘03_Introduction’ , ‘04_Chapter 1’ etc.). The following formatting conventions should be followed (or this template used): MAIN BODY TEXT – size 12, single line spacing, first paragraphs and paragraphs after blockquotes non-indented, subsequent paragraphs indented, no line spaces between paragraphs; BLOCKQUOTES – size 11, single line spacing, single line space above and below each blockquote also in size 11; CHAPTER TITLES – size 14, bold; SUBTITLES – size 12, bold; SUB-SUBTITLES – size 12, italics; FOOTNOTES – size 10, footnote/bibliographic referencing style such as Chicago A preferred, bibliography supplied as a separate attachment; indexes are generally not required.
The press will aim to publish within 12 months of receipt of the final manuscript. Author(s) receive 5 author copies when the book is published, and a fully typeset pdf review copy before publication for distribution with potential reviewers/blurb writers. Further copies may be supplied at the cost of printing & postage. Review copies (print and electronic) are sent to confirmed reviewers on request.
